The parish family of San Carlos Cathedral is very pleased that you wish to have your child baptized in the faith of the Catholic Church. At this cathedral, the sacrament of baptism has been ongoing since 1770, when St. Junipero Serra, a Franciscan priest, brought the Catholic faith to California and established this church on the shores of Monterey. We are so happy that you decided to baptize your baby in our historical and beautiful church.
It is a very good practice to baptize your baby as soon as possible. We baptize any child as long as one of the parents agrees and the child will be raised in the Catholic faith. It doesn’t matter if you are a single parent or if you were married in the Catholic Church or not! Your baby is God’s gift to you, to the Church, to the world and we are happy to baptize!
You may wonder what kind of paperwork is needed. It is simple: complete the baptismal registration form, make an appointment with our office and provide a copy of your baby’s birth certificate. Additionally, there is 45 minutes meeting with our baptismal coordinator. Some people call this a “baptismal class.” It is required for all families (and godparents) seeking baptism unless you have previously attended such class. As your pastor, the most important thing is that you and your family practice our faith by regularly attending Sunday Mass.
Godparents represent the parish and the Church. Ideally each child will have two Catholic godparents, a godfather and godmother. Remember that godparents have a lifetime commitment. Their role is helping to lead the child to profess the Catholic faith and to show this faith by living it. At least one godparent is needed. Non-Catholics cannot be godparents, however, a baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic Christian community can be a witness along with a Catholic godparent.
To schedule a baptism call our office at 831-373-2628 ext. 17 and make an appointment with our baptismal coordinator Cynthia Friesen (email@example.com). We celebrate baptisms every single day of the week including on Saturdays. On Sundays we celebrate baptisms during Masses. We are blessed to have so many military families. If that’s your case, please know that we are going to move mountains to have your child baptized here. Thank you for your service!
Be assured of our love and prayers as you prepare for this happy occasion. Let us know if there is anything else we can do to help you celebrate the baptism of your baby, the future of our Church!
In Christ who was baptized in the Jordan River,
Fr. Emil Robu, Pastor
