Roman Catholic Liturgy on September 23, 2012_
This Mass featured the San Carlos Cathedral Choir, directed by Karen Lips. Keyboard accompanist was Serena Underwood, well known Carmel Valley jazz pianist/arranger, who composed the Monterey Jazz Mass which we sang in our beautiful Cathedral. Jazz style hymns and psalms were also featured Serena at the grand piano, setting the pace for our San Carlos Choir. (Elaine Miller is the regular choir organist.) Liturgical dancers greatly enhanced the celebration. At 10:30, Terry Flanders and daughter Gabby joined Kathleen Catania in sacred gesture; at 12 noon, Kathleen with Jane Gasperson led the gestures.
The 12 noon liturgy was especially significant this year, as it introduced the first in a series Children’s Faith Formation Special Masses designed especially for those children, and their parents, who are preparing to receive their sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Cynthia Friesen, Sr. Sharon McMillan and Fr. Patrick Dooling designed a presentation of the Holy Gospel which included the children’s participation and was enhanced with gestures particularly meaningful to the youngsters. Further, a beautiful little girl was baptized!
Mark Sowlakis, San Francisco clarinet/saxophone player, joined us, favorite Monterey percussionist Greg Janusz, and local bassist Don Roseff completed the instrumental accompaniment, all under dirction of Serena.
